02 — What Is It

Understanding the Tomodachi Life Personality Chart

In Tomodachi Life, every Mii you create is assigned one of 16 distinct personality types. These personalities determine how your Mii behaves on the island — from how they talk to neighbors, to what hobbies they prefer, to how they handle romantic relationships. The personality chart maps all 16 types onto a 4×4 grid based on two axes of slider values.

Your Mii's personality is calculated from four of the five creation sliders: Speech, Movement, Thinking (called Attitude in EU/AU), and Energy. The game adds Speech + Movement for one axis and Thinking + Energy for the other, placing your Mii into one of the 16 cells on the personality chart. The fifth slider, Overall, affects speaking style but not personality type.

The 4 Tomodachi Life personality groups: Considerate, Outgoing, Reserved, and Ambitious with their key traits

The Four Groups

Considerate(Easy-Going)

Gentle, kind Miis who avoid conflict and care deeply about others.

Outgoing(Energetic)

Bold, expressive Miis who love socializing and being the center of attention.

Reserved(Reserved)

Thoughtful, independent Miis who value their personal space and quiet time.

Ambitious(Confident)

Driven, competitive Miis who set goals and work hard to achieve them.

03 — How It Works

How the Tomodachi Life Personality Chart Works

1

Set Your Sliders

When creating or editing a Mii, adjust the five personality sliders: Movement, Speech, Energy, Thinking, and Overall. Each ranges from 0 to 7, though Speech and Thinking skip value 4.

2

Calculate the Axes

The game combines Speech + Movement into one score (0–15) and Thinking + Energy into another (0–15). These two scores form the horizontal and vertical axes of the personality chart.

3

Find Your Type

Your two scores place your Mii into one specific cell on the 4×4 personality chart. Each cell corresponds to a unique personality type with its own behaviors, quirks, and in-game interactions.

The Personality Slider System

Tomodachi Life uses four personality sliders — Movement, Speech, Energy, and Thinking — to determine your Mii's type. Each slider ranges from 0 to 7, but Speech and Thinking internally skip value 4, mapping to 0-3 and 5-8 instead.

The game pairs these sliders into two axes: Speech + Movement controls the horizontal position on the personality chart, while Thinking + Energy controls the vertical. Together they place your Mii into one of 16 personality cells. The fifth slider, Overall, only affects speaking style and has no impact on the personality type.

Each personality type in LTD creates a unique island experience. Considerate Miis are the peacemakers — they mediate fights, share food generously, and tend to develop deep one-on-one friendships. Outgoing types are the life of the party, often starting trends, pulling pranks, and forming large friend groups quickly. Reserved Miis prefer solitary activities like reading and stargazing, but form incredibly loyal bonds with the few friends they make. AmbitiousMiis are natural leaders who organize group activities, compete in games, and aren't afraid to speak their mind during island debates.

05 — Pro Tips

Tips for Using the Tomodachi Life Personality Chart

Building a thriving island in LTD requires a thoughtful mix of personality types. Having all 16 Miis with the same personality creates a monotonous island where everyone behaves the same way. Instead, aim for diversity across the four personality groups — a mix of Considerate, Outgoing, Reserved, and Ambitious types creates the most dynamic interactions, surprising friendships, and entertaining conflicts.

When using the Personality Calculator, remember that slider values near the boundaries between personality types can be useful if you want to give your Mii traits that blend two types. A Mii on the border between Considerate and Outgoing will show elements of both groups' behaviors, creating a unique personality that doesn't fit neatly into one box.

If you're recreating real people or fictional characters as Miis, think about their dominant traits first. A shy bookworm leans toward the Reserved group; a charismatic leader fits the Ambitious group. Use the Personality Calculator to match real-world traits to a type, take the personality quiz to find your own, browse the Mii ideas gallery for inspiration from other players' designs, or design a brand-new Mii in the online Mii creator and decide its personality here. Already have a Mii's QR code? The QR code Mii decoder turns it into rebuild instructions. And to get a recreated character's height right, the Tomodachi Life height calculator converts a real height into the exact Mii Maker slider notches. To finish the character off, give them a catchphrase from our Tomodachi Life phrases ideas and generator. 07 — FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Mii Personalities

Can I change my Mii's personality type after creating them?
Yes. In Tomodachi Life, go to Town Hall, select your Mii, and choose the Personality editor. You can adjust the sliders at any time to give your Mii a different personality type, and the change applies immediately. See our full guide on how to change Mii personality for the Town Hall steps, slider values for every type, and what we know about its effect on friendships.
Does the Overall slider affect personality type?
No. The Overall slider only changes your Mii's speaking style and mannerisms — it does not factor into the personality type calculation at all. Only the Speech, Movement, Thinking (Attitude in EU/AU), and Energy sliders determine which of the 16 personality types your Mii receives.
Why do Speech and Thinking sliders skip value 4?
This is a quirk of the Tomodachi Life personality system. The Speech and Thinking sliders display values 0 through 7 in the interface, but internally they map to 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 — skipping 4 entirely. This means each slider actually produces a value from 0 to 8, and when combined with the Movement or Energy slider (0–7), creates the full 0–15 range needed for the personality chart.
Are personality names different in the EU and NA versions?
Yes. Tomodachi Life uses different personality names depending on your region. For example, the NA group "Considerate" is called "Easy-Going" in EU/AU, and the NA personality "Sweetie" is called "Softie" in the PAL version. The behaviors are identical — only the names differ. Check our Regional Differences Guide for a complete comparison.
Which personality type is the best in Tomodachi Life?
There is no objectively "best" personality type — each one brings unique behaviors and interactions to your island. Outgoing types create the most dramatic and entertaining moments, Reserved types tend to have the most stable relationships, Considerate types keep the peace, and Ambitious types drive the most island events. The best approach is to have a mix of personality types for a dynamic island experience.
